Ongoing Projects

Sustainability is a key consideration in all our projects. Ongoing Projects are mainly the result of post implementation evaluation findings that identified the need for research and development and/or supplementary initiatives.

Microfinance
Eastern Province
The SLWCS' community managed Microfinance Scheme is aimed at to stimulating self-employment enterprises among the participants of the agro-forestry and home-garden development projects.
Saving Elephants by Helping People
Model Dairy Farm
Moragaha Ulpotha site, Wilgamuwa DSD, Central Province
Developing appropriate land management systems, sustainable technologies and a nucleus breeding program to increase milk production without increasing the number of cattle or deforestation to convert additional forest into pasture.
Volunteers Program
Wasgamuwa Base Complex
An overseas volunteer program within the capacity building aspect of SEHP. The main components are:
eaching English and Information Technology in rural schools to enhance secondary school students’ employability and ability to undertake higher studies
Elephant Research to improve conservation techniques
Computer Centers Program
Wasgamuwa
This is aimed at providing improved infrastructural facilities for the English and IT educational programs./dd>
Elephant Intrusion Early Warning System – eleAlert
This is a research and development initiative being done jointly with the University of Moratuwa. It is a logical next step to increase the effectiveness of electric fences. eleAlert is a remote sensing and alarm system to detect breaches/malfunctions in the electric fences utilizing mobile phone technology. It automatically alerts and directs a repair crew to the exact location of the fault/damage thereby ensuring that it is repaired without delay.
Project Orange Elephant
Wasgamuwa Base Complex
Project Orange Elephant is a research project located in the village of Irriyagasulpotha in the Central Province to develop alternative crops to act as economic buffers to farmers who suffer frequent damage to their rice fields from elephants. As a secondary benefit the citrus trees since they are not a preferred food of elephants’ acts as a “living fence” that deters elephants from venturing into villages. Therefore the project provides an opportunity to test the efficacy of biological fences as deterrents to marauding elephants. These “living fences” are trees and other crops that are repugnant to elephants. These methods have shown promise in protecting lives of people and elephants.
Common Ground
A documentary on human elephant conflict.
Serene Waters – Integrated Agriculture Project
Wasgamuwa Base Complex
Designed to be a demonstration site for eco-agriculture.
eleID
This is also a joint project between the SLWCS and University of Moratuwa to compile a cross referenced online database of elephants to identify their 'home range'. It uses facial/pattern recognition software to compare photographs in the database and match them to already identified individual animals. This will be a boon not only to researchers and conservationists but also to nature tour operators and wildlife enthusiasts, adding a new dimension to their knowledge by opening elephant research to "citizen science"
Captive Elephant Breeding Project
A breeding program among domesticated elephants to maintain the numbers of captive animals and avoid capturing wild elephants
Diviya Pooping Ghost Project
Survey of leopards in the Central Province
Outdoor Environmental Education Program (OEEP)
'Catch them young!' OEEP is a SLWCS initiative approved by the Ministry Of Education for children to acquire environmental knowledge through experiential interactive field-based education.
c2GIS
This is SLWCS' Geographic Information System (GIS) Center which provides the mapping services to integrate socio-economic and biodiversity data for more effective conservation activities and is also equipped to provide such services on a commercial basis. [gis.slwcs.org]
